Laurent Dauptain est né le 25 mars 1961 à Paris. Très tôt attiré par la peinture, il entre à dix-huit ans à l’École nationale supérieure des beaux-arts de Paris, où il est l’élève de Pierre Carron et Vincent Guignebert. Il poursuit sa formation à l’École nationale supérieure des arts décoratifs de Paris auprès de Zao Wou-Ki, puis étudie l’esthétique à l’Université Paris Panthéon-Sorbonne. Ses travaux d’études, consacrés à l’autoportrait et aux relations entre peinture et photographie, annoncent déjà les questions qui traversent son œuvre.Sa première exposition personnelle, en 1981, est consacrée à l’autoportrait. Depuis lors, il n’a cessé d’explorer son propre visage, réalisant en plus de quarante-cinq ans plus de deux mille œuvres à travers les différentes techniques du dessin et de la peinture, souvent à partir de photographies qu’il réalise lui-même. À partir des années 1990, il développe également une peinture de paysage (marines, routes, paysages industriels), puis des natures mortes à partir de 2002, en particulier des bouquets représentés hors d’échelle. En 2007, une exposition chez Axelle Fine Arts à New York inspire une série de vues de la ville. D’autres séries suivent : scènes d’intérieur montrant des groupes de jeunes gens en attente (2016), personnages endormis (2018), puis paysages urbains inspirés de Venise à partir de 2024.
Sa peinture s’inscrit dans la tradition classique, notamment celle du XVIIᵉ siècle. Admirateur de Rembrandt, Vermeer, Velázquez et Caravage, mais aussi de Bonnard, Bacon et Chuck Close, il développe une touche dynamique au service de la lumière, mêlant peinture fluide et empâtements dans un style oscillant entre expressionnisme et photoréalisme.
Depuis le début des années 1980, Laurent Dauptain expose régulièrement en France et à l’étranger Son travail figure dans de nombreuses collections et publications. En 2014, François Catonné lui consacre un film documentaire : Laurent Dauptain, un face à face. En 2025 paraît sa première monographie, Le sujet n’est pas le sujet, avec une introduction d’Evelyne Artaud (Éditions Le Livre d’Art).
Biography
Laurent Dauptain was born in Paris on March 25, 1961. Drawn to painting from an early age, he entered the École nationale supérieure des beaux-arts de Paris at eighteen, where he studied with Pierre Carron and Vincent Guignebert. He later continued his training at the École nationale supérieure des arts décoratifs in Paris with Zao Wou-Ki, and went on to study aesthetics at the University of Paris Panthéon-Sorbonne. His early academic work, devoted to self-portraiture and to the relationship between painting and photography, already foreshadowed the questions that continue to shape his artistic research.
His first solo exhibition, in 1981, was devoted to the self-portrait. Since then, he has continuously explored his own face, producing more than two thousand works over the past forty years using a wide range of drawing and painting techniques, often working from photographs he takes himself. Beyond the individual portrait, his approach seeks a broader, more universal reflection on the human condition.
From the 1990s onward, he also developed a body of landscape paintings, including seascapes, roads, and industrial views. Beginning in 2002, he created still lifes, particularly bouquets painted on an altered scale. In 2007, an exhibition at Axelle Fine Arts in New York inspired a series of city views depicting the silent perspectives of large avenues. Other series followed: interior scenes showing groups of young people in moments of waiting (2016), sleeping figures (2018), and, from 2024 onward, renewed urban landscapes inspired by Venice.
His technique is rooted in the tradition of classical painting, particularly that of the seventeenth century. An admirer of Rembrandt, Vermeer, Velázquez, and Caravaggio, as well as Bonnard, Bacon, and Chuck Close, he has developed a dynamic brushwork devoted to light, combining fluid paint with thick impasto in a style that oscillates between expressionism and a form of photorealism.
Since the early 1980s, Laurent Dauptain has exhibited regularly in France and abroad. His work is included in numerous collections and publications. In 2014, François Catonné devoted a documentary film to him, Laurent Dauptain, un face à face. In 2025, his first monograph, Le sujet n’est pas le sujet, with an introduction by Evelyne Artaud, was published by Éditions Le Livre d’Art.
